The Power of Words

Events of this past week have disturbed me greatly.  I say“disturbed, because it’s not anger or frustration I feel, but a deep sense of distress and disappointment as I watched crowds of people chant loudly “Send her back” in reference to four American congresswomen. As a public speaker, I am keenly aware of how words influence and excite people. For this reason, I spend hours determining what I want to say and convey, then carefully choose the words by which to say it.  Even then, misinterpretations occur and people can be hurt.

Notre Dame

Many of us watched in shock at the recent fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. A beautiful structure, representative of the artistic and architectural genius of humankind. It required 200 years to build, who knows how long it will take to repair? Nonetheless, I am confident of its restoration and hopeful it will reclaim its place of prominence for people of all faiths and nations.

Raise The Steeple Update

I'd like to share the followin gupdates on our Raise The Steeple remodeling project:

1) The abatement work has moved to the first floor of our main building. We anticipate several more weeks before the ceiling and floor tile are finished. The bathrooms on the first floor are useable and don't forget  about the four restrooms located in the breezeway between buildings that are accessible and open. We have been assured by our contractor the material used for the abatement project is organic.

Ideals That matter

I found the services in honor of President H.W. Bush, to be quite moving.  It is only right that we pay respect as a nation, to those who have given so much in leading our country.  The before and after pictures of our presidents reveals the stress involved in holding that office.

Stop!

I begin with an apology for not contributing to my blog for the past several weeks.  There has been so much craziness in the world lately, I was simply overwhelmed.  I found myself emotionally and mentally paralyzed, unable to put pencil to paper.  Where would I even begin?

As I attempt to write this week, I still am unsure of where to begin.  However, I do know where things should end!  That ending is, with the cessation of the name calling, blame setting, and inflammatory language which is so common and thoughtlessly spewed these days. It is no longer considered unacceptable, but instead the new norm.  It’s not courageous!  It’s not healthy, edifying, or unifying!  It’s more akin to witnessing a playground brawl, and all of us remember where such acting out ended up — the principle’s office.

Who Is A Hero?

One of the things that has occurred in the aftermath of 9/11 is the use of the label/title of “hero”.  I can’t specifically name how or why this happened, but suddenly, it felt like anybody who did something unexpected, out of the norm, or risky was awarded that title.  Some of these individuals were children, others adults.  Some leveraged their notoriety into television careers, while others received movie roles.  It’s important to honor those who risk their well-being on behalf of others, especially when so much bad news occupies our attention.  It gives me hope!  But are these identifiable, one time acts of selflessness, the only expression of heroism?

Truth Decay

“Truth isn’t truth”, or is it?  This is the question that currently confronts all of us, as we struggle to define what is an acceptable standard for moral behavior, both on an individual and corporate level.  Even though I think I understand what Rudy Guilliani meant when he said, “Truth, isn’t truth!” (i.e. two different people with two different versions of the same event and what really happened), it was still shocking to hear.

A City On A Hill?

Recently, several people have inquired as to what I thought were the most challenging times over the course of my 36 years in local church ministry.  It took me a minute or so, as I mentally reviewed events, actions, and crisis from that time span before I could respond.  After all, those years included:  recessions, wars, and natural disasters (i.e. the Challenger and Twin Towers), along with multiple elections, impeachments; as well as economic booms and busts.  All of which impacted the spirit of the nation, the corporate lives of congregations, and the individual lives of church members.  And contrary to the wishful thinking of some, neither the church, nor its constituency, exist in a “bubble” of isolation.  One way or another, these things affect our lives as they impact our spirits and we bring them with us to church, as we rightly should!

Now Is The Time!

The activity level at church has been very high as we move through the concluding days of Lent, which also include finalizing details for Easter.  Many of you have inquired as to the location of our Sunrise service in light of the road construction.  Have no fear . . . Easter will come, only this year it will be moved a few blocks north on Pass-a-Grille Way near the Park (shuffleboard location).  The bonus that comes with this shift is easier parking.  We anticipate this will only be for 2018 and that in 2019 we will return to our original worship spot.

It's All Relative

Can you believe how cold it is outside?  It’s March and the temperature is fifty degrees.  It’s so cold, I saw someone walking the beach wearing long pants, a sweatshirt, and . . . what appeared to be a down vest!!!  Which goes to show how really cold it is here, in St. Pete, Florida!!!!!!
