Searching For Relevance

In today’s world it is easy to get caught up in the everyday noises and distractions. This blog seeks to help you focus on the intersection between faith and life.  Enjoy, ponder, and make a difference!

Now Is The Time!

The activity level at church has been very high as we move through the concluding days of Lent, which also include finalizing details for Easter.  Many of you have inquired as to the location of our Sunrise service in light of the road construction.  Have no fear . . . Easter will come, only this year it will be moved a few blocks north on Pass-a-Grille Way near the Park (shuffleboard location).  The bonus that comes with this shift is easier parking.  We anticipate this will only be for 2018 and that in 2019 we will return to our original worship spot.

It's All Relative

Can you believe how cold it is outside?  It’s March and the temperature is fifty degrees.  It’s so cold, I saw someone walking the beach wearing long pants, a sweatshirt, and . . . what appeared to be a down vest!!!  Which goes to show how really cold it is here, in St. Pete, Florida!!!!!!

Thanks

I have always liked shopping at Dick’s, it’s just that now I appreciate them more.  Why?  Well, let me take a step or so back!

It was two weeks ago that in my blog entitled “Enough,” following the shootings in Parkland, I asked the question, “What would you give up to save the life of even one of the seventeen students and teachers killed by the gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

How's Your Soul?

I would like to thank those who responded to my “blog” last week regarding the Parkland High School Shooting.  All of us struggle with what appears to be the rapidly rising frequency of senseless violence in our country, fueled by the vitriolic words and intransigent attitudes of individuals and groups who hold opposing viewpoints and reactionary answers.  I am convinced that if we truly seek the good of our society with open-mindedness, we can find a way to make everyone safer.

ENOUGH!!

Once again, hate and violence have entered the corridors and classrooms of our country’s educational system.  In fact, the tragedy of this past week in Parkland, Florida marks the 18th such event in the United States this year.  As a parent, I cannot fathom the heartbreak these families must be experiencing having said, “goodbye” to their children Tuesday morning as they headed off to school, never to say “hello” to them again!

Looking Ahead

I must admit, I was both excited and anxious about our congregational meeting on January 21, at which members overwhelmingly approved the recently presented Capital Improvement Program for our church facility.  I was anxious, because I know how much work and commitment an effort such as this requires.  I can only liken it to having one’s kitchen remodeled — no matter how necessary, it is still inconvenient, loaded with yet to identify answers to unexpected questions.  In contrast however, I am excited,  because I know the energy such a project can produce as people pull together to reshape their spiritual home.  Besides, it is so apparent that our facility needs care and attention, and to not address things would be unfaithful.

Not So Funny Circus

This past week, Jeanne and I went to see the movie, “The Greatest Showman”.  It is an enjoyable musical about the early stages of P.T. Barnum’s circus.  Now, as a student of history, I realize that Barnum’s story is not as pleasant as the show portrays, however, the authors of this presentation share a powerful message within the context of an uplifting theme which, simply stated in the words of an old Sunday School song, “All God’s Critters Got A Place In The Choir.”
