Searching For Relevance

In today’s world it is easy to get caught up in the everyday noises and distractions. This blog seeks to help you focus on the intersection between faith and life.  Enjoy, ponder, and make a difference!

ENOUGH!!

Once again, hate and violence have entered the corridors and classrooms of our country’s educational system.  In fact, the tragedy of this past week in Parkland, Florida marks the 18th such event in the United States this year.  As a parent, I cannot fathom the heartbreak these families must be experiencing having said, “goodbye” to their children Tuesday morning as they headed off to school, never to say “hello” to them again!

Looking Ahead

I must admit, I was both excited and anxious about our congregational meeting on January 21, at which members overwhelmingly approved the recently presented Capital Improvement Program for our church facility.  I was anxious, because I know how much work and commitment an effort such as this requires.  I can only liken it to having one’s kitchen remodeled — no matter how necessary, it is still inconvenient, loaded with yet to identify answers to unexpected questions.  In contrast however, I am excited,  because I know the energy such a project can produce as people pull together to reshape their spiritual home.  Besides, it is so apparent that our facility needs care and attention, and to not address things would be unfaithful.

Not So Funny Circus

This past week, Jeanne and I went to see the movie, “The Greatest Showman”.  It is an enjoyable musical about the early stages of P.T. Barnum’s circus.  Now, as a student of history, I realize that Barnum’s story is not as pleasant as the show portrays, however, the authors of this presentation share a powerful message within the context of an uplifting theme which, simply stated in the words of an old Sunday School song, “All God’s Critters Got A Place In The Choir.”

"Congress and the Budget" this Pastor's Concern

A few months back, I spoke to our congregation regarding my concern with a political movement to revoke the Johnson Amendment.  For those unfamiliar with this law, it was approved by Congress in the 1950s to make a distinction between churches, and political organizations as well as government lobbying groups.  This meant that I, as your pastor, was free to discuss my personal political preferences for one candidate or another, except in any formal role as a representative of the church  — specifically, from the Pulpit.

Remembering A Past That Speaks To Our Future

Everyone is aware that this next week brings the annual event of Halloween, a holiday second only to Christmas in popularity and the merchandising.  But alongside this day comes a lesser known celebration, especially for the year 2017.  Of course, I am speaking about the 500 year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation — specifically the posting of Martin Luther’s 95 points of protest against practices of the Catholic Church on the doors of the church in Wittenburg, Germany.

Who We Listen To

Every day it is my practice to rise, do a morning devotion, and then glance through the latest news headlines — perusing a great variety stories journaled by publishers of all persuasions.  I want to know what’s going on so that I might have some sense as to what my parishioners might be feeling or facing, globally as well as locally.   Pew Research released a survey this past week revealing that Americans are the most anxiety ridden people in the world.  Why?  Well, trying to understand that, is one of the reasons I go through this practice every day.

Now What?

It has taken nearly a week to formulate any kind of response to the horrific shooting in Las Vegas this past week. How does one make any sense out of the insanity of such an act? It’s crazy! It’s surreal — beyond my imagination! It’s becoming an everyday happening! The only difference I now discern between the killings taking place one day or another is the increase in their size, and sadly, their involved planning and creativity.
